Af Samuelter Pérez’s shoe delay, León and Boston sock it to Indians

BOSTON (AP) — Sandy León hit a three-run homer off Oliver Pérez after the Indians reliever caused an odd stoppage asking for new footwear, J.D. Martinez homered twice and the Boston Red Sox beat Cleveland 12-5 Monday.

Jackie Bradley Jr. added two RBI doubles, and Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts each had two hits and scored twice for the Red Sox, who have won 18 of 26.

Boston held a moment of silence and showed highlights of former player Bill Buckner, who died Monday. He was 69.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia revealed before the game that he will take an indefinite leave in his long struggle to recover from knee trouble, putting in doubt whether he’ll play again in the majors.

The Indians have lost seven of eight, and even the team’s equipment is having a rough go of it.

Pérez put Fenway Park into a strange delay when he relieved during Boston’s six-run fifth inning. The 37-year-old left-hander noticed something amiss with his spikes while warming up and signaled for a replacement pair, leaving him milling about the mound in his socks while a trainer fetched fresh Nike’s from the clubhouse.

Boston socked it to him after that. Bradley hit one of his run-scoring doubles to make it 6-3, and León followed with his drive into the Green Monster seats.

Rafael Devers and Bogaerts had RBI doubles earlier in the inning against starter Jefry Rodríguez (1-5).

ATHLETICS 8, ANGELS 5

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jurickson Profar and Josh Phegley homered off former Oakland starter Trevor Cahill and the Athletics rolled to their 10th straight win.

Profar tied it with a two-run homer in the fourth against Cahill (2-5), and Phegley gave the A’s the lead for good with a leadoff shot in the fifth. Stephen Piscotty added a two-run single that inning to help Oakland to its first 10-game winning streak since 2006, with a caveat.

Matt Chapman tacked on a solo shot in the seventh to give him home runs in three straight games. Robbie Grossman had two doubles and an RBI in support of Chris Bassitt (3-1), who allowed five runs and six hits in five-plus innings.

The A’s then got four scoreless innings from five relievers. Blake Treinen pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances.

Albert Pujols hit his 642nd career homer, and Kole Calhoun and David Fletcher each had RBI doubles for the Angels, who have lost six of eight games.

MARLINS 3, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) — José Ureña pitched seven solid innings, Washington’s bullpen blew another lead behind ace Max Scherzer and Miami beat the Nationals to avoid a four-gam,上海龙凤419pa,e sweep.

After Scherzer went six innings and left leading 2-1, Tanner Rainey allowed the tying run in the seventh for the Nationals’ 11th blown save, matching the Chicago Cubs for most in the majors. Kyle Barraclough (1-2) then allowed Miguel Rojas’ go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth. Defensive miscues by first baseman Matt Adams and shortstop Trea Turner in those innings didn’t help, and Washington fell to 2-10 in Scherzer’s starts this season.

The Nationals loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but could not push the tying run across against the relief duo Nick Anderson and Adam Conley. Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save, dropping Washington to 22-32.

Ureña (3-6) allowed two earned runs and four hits to improve to 5-2 against the Nationals, including an earlier win this season.

YANKEES 5, PADRES 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Clint Frazier, Brett Gardner and Gary Sánchez homered, Manny Machado was booed and greeted with chants of “Over-rated!” in his first visit to New York since free agency and the Yankees beat San Diego for their eighth win in nine games.

Matt Strahm (2-4) struck out a career-high 10 in six innings but wasted a 2-0 lead in the Yankees’ three-run second.

Machado was interested in playing for the Bronx Bombers after becoming a free agent last fall and dined with Yankees officials in December, but New York did not pursue him to play third base. Machado signed a $300 million, 10-year contract with the Padres in late February.

Short on starting pitching with Luis Severino, James Paxton and CC Sabathia on the injured list, New York used Chad Green as an opener for the third time, and he struck out the side in the first. David Hale (1-0) allowed two runs and three hits over the next four innings for his first win since 2015.

ASTROS 6, CUBS 5

HOUSTON (AP) — Gerrit Cole tied a season high with 12 strikeouts in six solid innings and Houston reached Cole Hamels early and held on for a win over Chicago.

Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the first inning, but Cole (5-5) dominated after that, allowing two singles and striking out 10 over the next five innings.

Playing without injured stars Jose Altuve and George Springer, and Carlos Correa, who got a day off, the Astros cut the deficit to one in the second and scored five times off Hamels (4-1) in the third to take a 6-2 lead.

Jack Mayfield made his major league debut after playing more than 600 games in seven seasons in the minors. He hit a double in his first plate appearance in the second and got his first RBI on a groundout in Houston’s big third.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3, 11 INNINGS

DENVER (AP) — Raimel Tapia singled in the winning run in the 11th inning to give Colorado another dramatic victory.

It was Colorado’s third walk-off win in four games. The Rockies won two of three over the weekend against Baltimore in their final at-bat.

Ian Desmond set up Tapia’s clutch swing with a double that hit the top of the right-field fence and bounced into play. After a quick review to see if it was a homer, Desmond remained at second. On the next pitch from Matt Andriese (3-3), Tapia hit a grounder through the middle for his second career game-ending RBI.

Seunghwan Oh (2-1) earned the win with a 1-2-3 11th inning.

RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Yonny Chirinos was pulled after five no-hi,上海龙凤论坛bidm,t innings and Tampa Bay beat Toronto.

Chirinos (6-1) made his 11th appearance and fifth start this season. Oliver Drake relieved to begin the sixth and gave up a leadoff single to Luke Maile. Five Rays relievers completed a four-hitter.

Austin Meadows homered and drove in three runs for the Rays, who remain two games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees despite going a season-high 13 games over .500.

Aaron Sanchez (4-4) gave up one run and six hits before leaving after the third inning because of a problem,上海贵族宝贝论坛uxk, with the fingernail on his right middle finger.

PIRATES 8, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit a tiebreaking two-run triple in Pittsburgh’s four-run eighth inning, and the Pirates beat Cincinnati in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Reynolds’ liner off David Hernandez (1-3) got into the gap in left-center and drove in Cole Tucker and Adam Frazier. Starling Marte followed with a shot to center for his sixth homer, lifting Pittsburgh to an 8-4 lead.

Josh Bell also went deep for the Pirates, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Kyle Crick (2-1) got four outs for the win.

ORIOLES 5, TIGERS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) — Renato Núñez and Jonathan Villar homered, and Baltimore benefited from several miscues by skidding Detroit.

In a matchup between two struggling teams, the Orioles prevailed because of the long ball and a throwing error by shortstop Ronny Rodriguez that produced two unearned runs. Núñez hit a two-run homer off Daniel Norris (2-3) and Villar added a solo shot against Victor Alcántara in the seventh, sending Baltimore to its third win in 14 games.

After Gabriel Ynoa pitched four innings for Baltimore, Dan Straily (2-4) allowed one run in four innings and Shawn Armstrong got three outs for his first save.

Site of tragic 2011 Christmas blaze sells for $500 上海千花K

The plot of land that held the Connecticut home where three young girls and their two grandparents died in a Christmas day fire has been sold, a report said Monday.

Madonna Badger, who lost her five family members in the 2011 blaze, sold the .34 acre plot at 2267 Shippan Avenue in Stamford to her neighbor for $500,000, the Stamford Advocate reported.

The neighbor, Steve Loeb, told the newspaper that he plans to install a sculpture as a memorial for Badger’s daughters who were killed in the fire.

“I am planning a s,上海贵族宝贝论坛sa,culpture that will have three parts that move in the wind, one for each of the girls,” he said.

Badger put the lot on the market last year. She originally asked $850,000 for the land, which overlooks the Long Island Sound.

Mets’ Jacob deGrom Samuel catching plan isn’t going anywhere

LOS ANGELES — Tomas Nido received a second straight start behind the plate for Jacob deGrom on Monday, but that doesn’t mean the Mets ace necessarily has a personal catcher.

That is,上海419论坛kfw, manager Mickey Callaway’s story, at least, and he is sticking to it.

“It was more because Wilson [Ramos] had played four games in a row,” Callaway said before the Mets lost the opener of a four-game series at Dodger Stadium.

In five starts with Ramos behind the plate, deGrom has pitched to a 5.33 ERA this season. With Nido as the starting catcher for four starts, deGrom had pitched to a 0.67 ERA, entering play. DeGrom went five innings, giving up seven hits and two runs while striking out two Monday.

“[Nido] has done a great job,” Callaway said. “We trust both of these guys, but Ramos, we got him for a reason and he is going to continue to be our starting catcher the majority of the time.”

Callaway indicated he considered starting Nido on Sunday, but wanted Ramos’ bat in the lineup against the Tigers. Ramos entered play with an 1.160 OPS in his previous 14 games.

Robinson Cano accompanied the team on the road trip to participate in pregame workouts, suggesting he could be activated from the injured list when he is eligible on Sunday or shortly thereafter.

Cano has been sidelined with strained left quadriceps. Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo remained in New York to receive treatment from the medical staff and are likely behind Cano in their comeback timetable. McNeil has a strained left hamstring and Nimmo is ,爱上海dez, rehabbing from a bulging disk in his neck.

Seth Lugo also accompanied the Mets on the trip and could be close to a return from shoulder tendinitis. The right-hander has been playing catch, but is yet to throw a side session and may need to face hitters in a live batting practice before returning.

The Mets entered play with 98 runs scored in the seventh inning or later, which was tied with the Diamondbacks for the best such output in the major leagues. They added two more runs Monday night.

“We have a great bench, that is part of it,” Callaway said. “Our bench has probably had more success than most in Major League Baseball because they are embracing that role and they have the ability to do it.”

Mets pinch hitters ent,上海龙凤论坛ztkg, ered play with a National League-best .366 on-base percentage before going 1-for-2 on Monday.

Ramadan in Mideast is for fasting and Facebook Jassir, data shows

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The Muslim holy month of Ramadan, with its long days of fasting and prayer meant to draw worshippers closer to God and away from worldly distractions, is being reshaped by technology.

People in the Middle East spend close to 58 million more hours on Facebook during Ramadan and watch more YouTube videos — everything from beauty tips and recipes to sports and TV dramas — than any other time of the year, making the holy month not only the most important one for Muslims, but also the prime time of the year for advertisers.

For Facebook, which also owns Instagram, and Google, which owns YouTube, Ramadan brings a welcome boost of business in the region.

“Consumption and time spent on our platforms does indeed increase,” said Ramez Shehadi, Facebook’s managing director for Mideast and North Africa.

People stay up a lot more at night during Ramadan and have more downtime — especially before iftar, the evening meal that breaks the daylong fast, and the “suhoor,” when people gather to eat before another day of fasting. Many also work shorter hours during the day.

All that translates to 5% more time spent on Facebook’s platforms, or what is nearly 58 million more hours, Shehadi said. Put another way, there are almost 2 million hours of additional time spent daily on Facebook in the Mideast during Ramadan.

Ramadan is also the peak season for advertising in the region, as TV dramas and soap operas get a 151% increase in viewership on YouTube during the holy month, according to Google.

“Our revenue is a function of people’s engagement,” Shehadi said. “The more that they engage on our platforms, the more that advertisers want to be able to reach those that are engaging. That’s what drives our revenue.”

So much ad revenue is spent during Ramadan that Google launched “The Lantern Award” to celebrate the most creative and engaging ads of the month.

Yet Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food and drink, including water, during the day. It’s also about disconnecting from vacuous distractions and focusing on contemplation, introspection, acts of good, charity and connecting with God. It can appear then as a contradiction that this is also when companies ramp up their efforts to get people to buy more, view more and engage in excess consumerism.

Google does not disclose total watch time for YouTube during Ramadan, but says that in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, for example, viewing of sports videos jumps by 22%, travel videos by 30%, and action games, simulation and video games by 10-20% during the holy month.

People also spend 27% more time watching religious content on YouTube in Ramadan.

“To us, YouTube brings people together. We see a lot of people wanting to watch things together,” said Joyce Baz, Google’s head of communications in Mideast and North Africa.

She added that Google products, like its search engine, are there “to simplify people’s lives so that they can focus on things that matter like being with their loved ones and family.” Google’s “Qibla Finder,” for example, helps Muslims find the direction of Mecca to pray toward, wherever they happen to be.

Google says this year’s top trending search queries during the first week of Ramadan in Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia included a surprising mix of Game of Thrones, prayer times, Ramadan TV shows, movie timings and English Premier League results.

Meanwhile, some of the most popular downloaded apps in the Mideast on the Google Play store during Ramadan include games like Stack Ball, streaming apps like Vu and Shahid and online retailers Noon and Jolly Chic.

Iftar evening meals are a major social affair during Ramadan, ranging from lavish spreads at home to decadent five-star hotel buffets. This translates into a 16% spike in beauty product searches and an 18% spike in searches for beauty tips on YouTube, compared to the rest of the year. Also, according to Google maps, trips to the malls increase by more than 20% in the last weeks of Ramadan in preparation for the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which ends the holy month.

Fatima el-Barbar, an Egyptian mother living in Dubai, said she searches more for recipes and watches her favorite TV dramas online during Ramadan. But she said that between her job, taking care of the children, preparing iftar each night, her daily prayers and reading the Quran, the Muslim holy book, there’s little time for the internet.

“I actually have less time for the internet in Ramadan than in other days of the year,” she said.

To help companies better understand consumer habits in Ramadan, Google identified six c,上海龙凤论坛zey, ategories of audiences: dedicated watchers, devoted fasters, foodies, groomers, travelers and shoppers.

“YouTube is a companion during Ramadan, a platform where viewers can watch what they want, whenever they want throughout the day,” Google says in its own pitch to advertisers.

To more authentically connect with roughly 180 million users in the Middle East, Fa,爱上海fxh, cebook and Instagram launch special Ramadan icons to give people more customized ways of expressing themselves online. Instagram also has a campaign to promote acts of kindness during the month.

“We’re trying to be magnifiers and propagators of goodness as opposed to what might seem on the surface like an extension of consumerism,” Shehadi said. “It resonates with the ethos of Ramadan and certainly the ethos of Facebook, which is around bringing people together around things that m,上海贵族宝贝论坛vy,atter to them.”

Haitham el-Ghoneim, a Jordanian resident in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, said he uses Facebook to connect with friends during Ramadan, sharing traditional greetings for the holy month and checking on his family in Jordan.

Still, he doesn’t think the rest of it — all that time spent online, on games, scrolling and ads — is a good thing. “It’s not being spent in a useful way. It’s mostly fake news, or jokes and things that have no benefit,” he said.

Tainted liquor kil 上海贵族宝贝论坛ls 6 in northern India

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Police say at least six villagers have died after drinking tainted liquor in northern India.

Police officer Ajay Sahni says the deceased bought the liquor from a shop in in Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh state on Monday night.

They started vomiting after drinking it and were rushed to a distric,上海贵族宝贝论坛ax,t hospital. ,上海龙凤论坛pjnr,Sahni said six people died and another five were being treated at a hospital.

Deaths from illegally brewed alcohol are common in India because the poor cannot afford licensed brands from government-run shops. Illicit liquor is cheap and often spiked to increase potency.

In February, 150 people, mostly tea plantation workers, died and about 200 were hospitalized after drinking tainted liquor laced with methyl alcohol in two separate incidents in Assam state in India’s remote northeast.

The Ar 上海419论坛my asked soldiers for their service stories. The replies were painful to read

(CNN)It started with a simple question.

“How has serving impacted you?” the US Army asked on its Twitter account days before Memorial Day.

What came next was unexpected and heartbreaking. The tweet prompted a slew of gut-wrenching replies from veterans and their family members, including accounts of living with post-traumatic stress disorder and stories of suicide.

One such response came from college professor Lacy M. Johnson.
“My cousin committed suicide while on duty at the armory after coming home from a tour abroad,” Johnson said. She later tweeted that she did not wan,上海千花wq,t to speak to journalists about family’s experience.

Kristen L. Rouse, founding director of the NYC Veterans Alliance, told CNN Monday the tweets showed that veterans haven’t been and need to be heard.

“We are going on 18 years of war, continuous war in multiple countries, the cost of these wars has been born by our military, by our veterans community, by their families who often feel invisible and ignored,上海龙凤419bim,,” said Rouse, who served more than 23 years and has been on three tours in Afghanistan.

“We also heard on this Twitter thread from individuals or whose families served well prior to 9/11. It shows that our veterans and military community really needs to be heard.”

There are about 20 million veterans in the US, and fewer than half receive Veterans Affairs benefits or services, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. About 30% of these veterans served during the Vietnam War, 12% in the Gulf War and 11% to 20% in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, the VA says.

“We can’t talk enough about it, it’s wonderful that this is getting attention, that this struck a chord with people, to see the individual stories,” Rouse said.

The Army responded to its own thread Saturday.

“To everyone who responded to this thread, thank you for sharing your story. Your stories are real, they matter, and they may help others in similar situations. The Army is committed to,爱上海eb, the health, safety, and well-being of our Soldiers,” one tweet read.

“As we honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice this weekend by remembering their service, we are also mindful of the fact that we have to take care of those who came back home with scars we can’t see,” a second tweet read.

Lindsay Rodman, spokeswoman for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, told CNN Monday there’s still so much that can be done for veterans.

“We currently see a lot of people with mental health struggles who reach out to us,” said Rodman, who is a Marine veteran.

Rodman said not every veteran is being reached by the VA with reasons varying from a lack of outreach, to some vets not qualifying for such benefits.

There are resources for veterans, including the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 (select option 1) and veteranscrisisline.net.

“It’s essential,” Rodman said. “It is the immediate place to go if someone themselves are in crisis or if you know someone in crisis.”
