D Samuelesperate Zimbabweans Risk Lives in Abandoned Mines

Official,上海千花ots,s in Zimbabwe say the bodies of eight illegal miners have been retrieved from an abandoned gold mine about 50 kilometers north of H,上海贵族宝贝论坛xs,arare. The news Monday was a reminder of the risk faced by desperate illegal miners trying to make a living in the economically troubled southern African country. Matopo is a gold rich area in southern Zimbabwe, and some men there enter such mines, despite the danger involved.

These men are illegal miners, using a metal detector to search for gold at the Nugget Mine, about an hour’s drive from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city.

Illegal miners resting at Nugget Mine in Matopo district.

Piniel Ndingi-Nyoni is one of those who entered the mine, despite the recent collapse of a mine shaft that killed four men.

Ndingi-Nyoni says he has no choice but to take the risk.

“Problems at home force me to do this. We need school fees, you need food, there are medical bills to take care of, so all that force you to stay in the bush. It is not funny at all. In this cold weather, we sleep in shacks while the wife is at home. At times, we can go for three months without getting anything,” Ndingi-Nyoni said.

Piniel Ndingi-Nyoni is one of the illegal miners at Nugget Mine in Matopo district. The mine recently collapsed and killed four men.

A few minutes later, the illegal miners disappeared into the bush at the sight of officials in the area. Once the coast is clear, they re-appear.

No man gives up, is the motto 42-year-old Edward Madyauta lives by. He says he has gold rush dreams. But he says on several occasions, he has gone for months on a wild-goose chase.

What about fears of being trapped under, as what happened a few meters away?

“I do not fear death, because (I) usually get gold before depth gets past my height. So that can’t collapse on me. But those who go under have a higher risk of the shaft collapsing on them,” Madyauta explained.

On Monday, searchers found the bodies of eight men working an abandoned mine in Mazowe, north of the capital. It was the third fatal incident involving illegal miners this year.

Polite Kambamura, deputy minister of mines, says the government is worried about the trend and has embarked on a campaign to urge people to stay away from abandoned mines.

Polite Kambamura, Zimbabwe’s deputy m,上海419论坛dmkx,inister of mines, said on May 17, 2019 that the government is worried about the trend and has embarked on a campaign to urge people to stay away from abandoned mines.

“We are going to call on owners of such mines to show cause why they are not mining. We are risking the lives of many people. If a mine stays for long without any activity, the ground will weaken up,” Kambamura said. “Some of those miners are going underground to mine on pillars. The moment they mine on pillars, then there is no more support and the ground will fall off.”

But with Zimbabwe’s economy in meltdown and no recovery in sight, one wonders if any of the miners, like Nyoni and Madyauta in Matopo, will listen to the advice.

Two killed and dozens of others 爱上海 hurt in Japan stabbing spree

The attack took place near a park in the city of Kawasak,爱上海qjv,i, ab,上海龙凤419jxn,out 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Tokyo, authorities said.

The Kawasaki Fire Department earlier reported that 16 elementary school students and three adults were injured.

Victims were taken to four different hospitals. A spokesperson at the Nippon Medical School Musashikosugi Hospital confirmed the young girl and a 39-year-old man died.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo,上海龙凤论坛qkib, Abe said the attack was “heartbreaking.”

“We must keep our children safe at all costs,” Abe told reporters. “I’ve instructed the related ministers to take immediate action to ensure the children’s safety in going to and leaving school.”

The suspected attacker also died from a “self-inflicted wound,” Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. Police officers previously told NHK that the man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, had stabbed himself in the neck.

NHK reported earlier Tuesday that three people — including an elementary school student — were in critical condition. It’s unclear if the girl who died was among them.

Japan is considered one of the world’s safest developed countries. It boasts one of the world’s lowest homicide rates, according to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime. Mass stabbings are extremely rare in the country. In 2016, 19 people were killed in a stabbing spree at a care home for disabled people — the deadliest mass killing in Japan since the end of World War II.Japan also strictly regulates weapons, and it’s illegal for people to carry a pocket knife, craft knife, hunting knife or box cutter in public, according to the US State Department. The Tuesday incident took place during US President Donald Trump’s visit to the country. Speaking aboard a Japanese helicopter carrier, Trump said the American people grieved for the victims’ families.

Ser 上海419论坛bian troops placed on alert after Kosovo police arrests

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia has ordered its troops to full alert after reports that Kosovo police entered Serb-populated regions of the former S,爱上海to,erbian province.

Serbia’s state TV said Tuesday that Kosovo’s special police “burst into” northern Kosovo and made several arrests. There was no confirmation of the action from Pristina.

Serbian government official Marko Djuric says the Kosovo police action is designed to intimidate and expel Serbs from Kosovo and presents a “not only a threat to stability but the most direct threat to peace.”

Serbia lost control over Kosovo after a NATO intervention in 1999. It does not recognize Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence.

State TV says,上海龙凤论坛oti, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic ordered a full state of alert for Serbian troops.

Man with knives attacks schoolgirls Jonathanat bus stop outside Tokyo

Rescue workers operate at site where multiple people were wounded in suspected stabbing by man in Kawasaki, Japan, on May 28, 2019, in photo released by Kyodo news service Reuters

Kawasaki, Japan — A man carrying a knife in each hand and screaming “I will kill you” attacked schoolgirls waiting at a bus stop just outside Tokyo on Tuesday, killing two people and wounding more than a dozen. The suspect was found at the scene wi,上海贵族宝贝论坛sr,th apparent self-inflicted stab wounds and died later at a hospital, according to Japanese media.

Most of the victims were schoolgirls between six- and-12-years-old who were lined up at a bus stop near Noborito Park in the city of Kawasaki when the man, apparently in his 50s, began slashing them with knives.

Police said three people, including the attacker, were killed including an 11-year-old girl and a 39-year-old man, reportedly the slain girl’s father. At least 17 others, most of them schoolgirls, were wounded.

Japan’s national broadcaster NHK quoted police as saying the suspect died after stabbing himself in the neck at the scene and being found unconscious. Police did not immediately confirm those details.

President Trump offered his sympathy for the victims of the attack as he toured Japan’s largest warship, the Kaga, on the last day of his 4-day state visit to Japan.

“On behalf of the Firs,爱上海mz,t Lady and myself, I want to take a moment to send our prayers and sympathy to the victims of the stabbing attack this morning in Tokyo,” Mr. Trump said. “All Americans stand with the people of Japan and grieve the victims and for their families.”

Most of the victims attended a nearby school founded by Soeurs de la Charite de Quebec, an organization of Catholic nuns in Quebec City in Canada.

A witness told the Mainichi newspaper that he heard children shrieking after walking past a bus, and when he turned around, he saw a man wielding a knife in each hand, screaming “I will kill you” and several children were on the ground.

NHK, citing police, said a bus driver told officials that a man holding a knife in each hand walked toward the bus and started slashing children. NHK also interviewed a witness who said he saw the suspect trying to force his way onto a bus.

The attacker’s identity and motives weren’t immediately known.

Television footage showed emergency workers giving first aid to people inside an orange tent set up on the street, and police and other officials carrying the injured to ambulances.

Although Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, it has had a series of high-profile killings, including in 2016 when a former employee at a home for the disabled allegedly killed 19 and injured more than 20 others.

Several dead, dozens injured in knife attack in Japan

In July last year, a knife-wielding man slashed and killed a police officer in a local police station in northern Japan’s Toyama prefecture, then took the officer’s gun and fatally shot a security guard outside a nearby elementary school. The male suspect was shot by a second policema,上海龙凤419dvai,n and captured after the attack, but no motive was reported.

2 suspected tornadoes strike Ohio in 30 上海419论坛 minutes bringing ‘significant damage and injuries’

(CNN)The devastating severe weather that has barreled across much of the Plains and Midwest this week is still not over.

Two suspected tornadoes hit the metro Dayton, Ohio area Monday night, just 30 minutes apart, according to the National Weather Service and caused “significant damage and injuries,” according to the city. Another one is on its way south of Circleville, Ohio.

“TAKE COVER IF YOU ARE IN SOUTHEAST PICKAWAY COUNTY OR SOUTHWEST FAIRFIELD COUNTY,” the weather service said early Tuesday.

The first suspected tornado that hit Monday night crossed I-75 north of Dayton around 11:07 p.m. and carried a “tornado emergency warning,” the highest the weather service gives. The second crossed the highway about three miles away. There haven’t been any damage, injury or fatality reports yet.

The weather service gave a dire warning to parts of Ohio of multiple storms “capable of producing tornadoes.”

“Do not let your guard down,” the weather service said. “There are still several dangerous storms moving through the area!”

Memorial Day left no time for celebration for residents of the Midwest. There were up to 27 preliminary reports of tornadoes in Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and Colorado, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center and severe weather suburban Chicago caused severe flooding.

Much of the Midwest will again be at risk for severe storms and tornadoes on Tuesday. The greatest threat will be in cities including Tulsa, Oklahoma; Wichita, Kansas; Lincoln, Nebraska and Kansas City, Missouri, according to CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward.

The flood and tornado threats, as well as a heat wave will continue through the middle of the week.

“We continue to be stuck in the same pattern that plagued the country for past several days,” Ward said. “A large dome of high pressure will bring sweltering temperatures to the southeast, while the middle of the country will continue to see the threat of severe storms and flooding.”

Here’s what’s facing different parts of country.

Torrential rain and ‘catastrophic’ flooding threatens central US

With heavy rains drenching parts of the Midwest and Plains, many rivers have reached major flood stage, CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

“The Arkansas River is expected to exceed record flooding over the coming days,” he said.

Parts of the Arkansas Rive,上海龙凤419vfq,r could crest over 4 feet above the record, meaning “catastrophic flooding is possible in the towns of Van Buren and Fort Smith,” Hennen said.

In Oklahoma, where six people were killed in severe weather last week, the situation “still could get worse,” Gov. Kevin Stitt said Monday.

“We still have water still rising in the east,” he said. “We are not out of the woods yet.”

On Monday, more than 100 injuries were reported at local hospitals, the state health department said. All 77 counties were in a state of emergency.

The governor said he toured the destruction left by a tornado that struck El Reno on Saturday night, noting it was “unbelievable how violent” it was.

Some of the mobile homes, he said, “look like they were blown up.”

Tulsa braces for record flooding and strained levees

In Tulsa, the weather service warned of severe weather threats ramping back up late Tuesday with storms, “very large hail” and tornado threats all in the cards.

The Arkansas River is rising, the city of Little Rock said on Facebook Tuesday, and officials have been concerned about the impact.

“The first thing everyone needs to understand is we are dealing with two situations. One is the rising river. The second is the ability to drain an,上海贵族宝贝论坛wqym,y storm water we might get here in our city over the coming days,” the city said on Facebook. “Our city’s storm water drains to the river and if it can’t go out, it could cause additional flooding.”

City engineers are working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to monitor the forecasted river levels and determine the areas which could be affected., the city said.

“The Mayor’s office will be coordinating staff to visit every home potentially affected by flooding,” the city said on Facebook. “We will be knocking on doors in the coming days to inform them of the potential threats to their homes.

Officials will also be dropping tons of sand to multiple locations and have “thousands of sandbags available.”

Hail and flooding in one Chicago suburb

Flood waters inundated streets and strong winds downed trees in Oak Lawn, a surburb southwest of Chicago.

Karina Polovinkina posted a photograph of Instagram of hail in her yard in Oak Lawn. She wrote “#sothisismay.”

Meanwhile, scorching temperatures in Georgia and Carolinas

Temperatures hit 99 degrees in Colu,上海龙凤论坛brn, mbia, South Carolina on Monday and 100 degrees in Augusta, Georgia, both records, according to Ward. Gainesville, Florida reached 102 degrees, an all time record for the month of May. Several other cities were close to the century mark.

Parts of Georgia and the Carolinas will likely see triple digit temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, Ward said.

Serena Williams Jonathan rallies after French Open first-round scare

(CNN)For all her singles titles on the grass at Wimbledon — seven of them — Serena Williams can still thrive on clay, despite its challenges.

The surface known as “terre battue” in French softens power games and has a way of extending battles, which can create problems, especially at late stages of careers.

On a blustery day in Paris on Monday, Williams looked in danger of losing in the opening round at the tournament for a second time, before defeating 83rd-ranked Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia 2-6 6-1 6-0 for her 800th main-draw professional win.

Such comebacks have been a hallmark of Williams’ unprecedented career. But showing rust in just her 10th match of 2019 — against the same opponent who stunned Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon last year — Williams appeared more vulnerable than usual.

Ultimately she came through it during a stretch of the campaign Williams usually enjoys.

The French Open buildup tournament of Rome, for e,爱上海dxu, xample, holds special memories — husband Alexis Ohanian first met and proposed to her in the Italian capital — and Williams has long owned an apartment in Paris. She likes,上海419论坛ib, competing on clay, too.

But that’s not to say things have gone entirely smoothly for Williams at Roland Garros.

Of the American’s open era record 23 majors, only three have come at the French Open.

And the only time in three decades Williams ever lost a first-round grand slam match came at the same venue in 2012 against France’s Virginie Razzano.

Turned it around

Williams admitt,上海贵族宝贝论坛us,ed to more nerves than usual and having “concrete blocks on my feet,” which could explain Monday’s first set.

The manner however in which she dominated the final two sets is promising for the 37-year-old, who is seeking to match Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 grand slams and dually win her first as a mom.

She will certainly hope to complete a second match, something she has failed to do at any tournament since January’s Australian Open.

A knee injury or illness ruled her out at Indian Wells, Miami and Rome, where the knee problem scuppered a meeting with older sister Venus. Her pivotal ankle sprain at the Australian Open got the injury ball rolling and Williams said “everything went downhill from there.”

A year after wearing a catsuit that displeased tournament officials — there were medical reasons for the outfit — Williams donned a zebra printed outfit on center court that eventually required a sweat top due to a dip in temperatures. A cape that went with it before the match had the words “mother, champion, queen, goddess.”

“Those are things that mean a lot to me and reminders for me and for everyone that wants to wear it,” she said. “Just remind everyone that they can be champions and are queens. So I love that about it.

“And I don’t know, my super power today was just hanging in there and staying positive for once.”

Williams appeared hot under the collar with some of her 14 unforced errors in the first set but in the last two combined for 20 winners and a mere 10 unforced errors.

A roar and stomp of the foot after making one error at the start of the second set might have sparked the turnaround.

“I just was so frustrated at that point, because I have been training well,” she continued to reporters. “The past week and a half has been really good and it was like, ‘This isn’t the Serena I have been practicing with or that I see every day.

“I just let out this roar, and here I am.”

The famous Williams serve kicked in too, resulting in just three dropped points behind her first serve in the final two frames.

Assuming Williams adequately recovers physically, it is difficult to envisage either Kurumi Nara or Dalila Jakupovic — their match was suspended due to darkness — ousting her in the second round. Greater tests could await in round three, through either Canadian Bianca Andreescu or another North American enjoying a breakout season, American Sofia Kenin.

Williams has her sights set on a deeper stay.

“There is only one way for me to enjoy it here. I don’t enjoy places when I don’t win, so that’s why I like playing in all four Grand Slams,” she said.

Kvitova, Wozniacki out

As Williams focused on staying healthy on the court, another tournament contender, Petra Kvitova, pulled out ahead of her tussle with Sorana Cirstea due to a forearm injury.

Then former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki departed in three sets to Diatchenko’s countrywoman, Veronika Kudermetova, 0-6 6-3 6-3.

Wozniacki and another former No. 1, Angelique Kerber — downed Sunday by a Russian, Anastasia Potapova — faced a race against time to play at Roland Garros due to calf and ankle injuries, respectively, so their departures weren’t entirely surprising.

Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic leaving proceedings in the first round would have counted as gigantic shocks but they both progressed, over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann (6-2 6-1 6-3) and Hubert Hurkacz (6-4 6-2 6-2).

On paper the 44th-ranked Hurkacz presented a tough test but the Serb clinically dispatched the fast-rising Pole. Last year’s finalist, Dominic Thiem, trailed American Tommy Paul 4-0 in a key third-set tiebreak but stormed back for a more difficult 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 win on his favored Suzanne Lenglen court.

It is still early going at Roland Garros but there was little to suggest from Monday’s performances that Djokovic — bidding to win four straight majors for a second time — and 11-time champion Nadal won’t face off in the final in under two weeks.

Williams wasn’t as convincing — but no one dares count her out.

UN agency: Attacks o 上海龙凤论坛n schools in Afghanistan tripled in 2018

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The United Nations children’s agency says attacks on schools in Afghanistan tripled in 2018, compared to the year before.

UNICEF’s press release on Tuesday says t,上海千花deqs,he number of attacks on schools went from 68 in 2017, to 192 in 2018. It was the first time school attacks had increased since 2015.

The agency says one of the reasons for the spike was that schools were used as voter registration and polling centers in last year parliamentary e,上海419论坛hta,lections.

UNICEF also says Afghanistan’s conflict and deteriorating security situation left more than 1,000 schools closed last year. Half a million children were denied their right to education.

An estimated 3.7 million children between 7 and 17 years of age — nearly half of all s,上海龙凤419phk,chool-aged children — are out of school in Afghanistan.

De Blasio Got Their Donations. Chaz Their Votes for President? Not So Much.

[What you need to know to start the day: Get New York Today in your inbox.,上海千花fcp,]

As Mayor Bill de Blasio enters the 2020 presidential race, an exclusive group of people would seem to be natural allies: the 115 people who contributed $458,000 to his federal political action committee.

Yet even among those who gave the maximum $5,000, few said they were willing to put their votes where their money went.

Dozens of interviews conducted by The New York Times with Mr. de Blasio’s donors provided a snapshot of his lukewarm support for president — even from a self-selected group of people willing to spend thousands of dollars to help the New York City mayor in his federal efforts.

Mr. de Blasio’s fund-raising targets resembled those from his mayoral campaigns, as he tapped familiar sources of money from the middle rungs of the construction and real estate industries, and from ethnic business communities in and around New York City.

They said they gave to Mr. de Blasio’s federal committee, known as Fairness PAC, for a variety of reasons. Some pointed to his record as mayor. Some said they did so to have a chance to talk to the mayor. Others donated after being asked by another member of their community.

“Honestly speaking, I was asked by a co-worker if I can help, and I did,” said Nail Capri, an executive at a roofing and restoration company who contributed $5,000 last year. In March, Mr. Capri also attended a fund-raiser for the mayor, a Democrat, that drew attendees mostly from New York’s Albanian community.

So is Mr. de Blasio your candidate for president?

“For me, personally, no,” he said.

The same could be said for a better-known $5,000 donor: the billionaire media mogul Barry Diller.

“I’m certainly not a supporter of him running for president. I’m not a supporter of anyone at the moment,” said Mr. Diller, who is funding the construction of a park-island on Manhattan’s West Side. “He was very helpful to us in building, and supportive of building, the island that we’re building in the Hudson ,爱上海kn,River.”

“And that’s why,” he said.

JonathanMerkel warns of populists’ rise in Europe

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Ange,上海贵族宝贝论坛hc,la Merkel says Germany has to be more vigilant when it comes to nationalist movements across,爱上海jra, Europe because of the country’s Nazi past.

Merkel, who was interviewed by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in Berlin, said in excerpts released Tuesday that Germany has to face up to populists who are finding mainstream support and recount “what history has brought.”

Referring to populist parties across the continent that were boosted by European Parliament elections on the weekend that, Merkel said, “in Germany, obviously, they always h,上海千花xly, ave to be seen in a certain context, in the context of our past, which means we have to be that much more vigilant than others.”

Merkel, speaking Monday, also condemned the rise of anti-Semitism in the country, saying Germany “always had a certain number of anti-Semites among us, unfortunately.”
