‘Nobody ever quit.’ Men who 上海龙凤论坛found Amanda Eller share details of the rescue

They believed she was still alive and had been moving faster and farther than the search teams looking for her in a thick Hawaiian forest.

“We were just sort of swinging for the fence one last time and checking everything out,” Chris Berquist, one of the three men who found Eller told CNN Monday.

As the sun was setting on Friday — 17 days after Eller had walked into the woods for a short hike — Berquist, Javier Cantellops and Troy Helmer flew in a helicopter over waterfalls and swimming holes, keeping their eyes down onto the treacherous terrain, Cantellops said.

“We are coming around the bend,” Berquist said. “And we saw her.”

They were so excited, he said, the pilot “had to tell us to calm down (because) the helicopter was shaking.”

By the time the rescuers reached her, Eller had severe sunburns, had lost her shoes, could barely walk and had dropped nearly 15 pounds. She had survived on fruit, river water and the power of will, even though several helicopters had already passed her by.

“What a blessing on how organically this rescue came together,” Berquist said. “The right people stuck together like Velcro. Nobody ever quit.”

Two of the rescuers had military backgrounds

Two of the three rescuers credited military and survival training with helping them find Eller.

Cantellops, 37, did two tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.

“It happens to be that the topography of the forest where we found her is just like where we trained in Georgia,” he told CNN. “The slopes, the terrain, the plant life, very similar. It’s like a switch got flipped on in my head and I said ‘I am going to lean on this to find her.'”

He said he’s also a diving and spearfishing instructor in Maui, and has “really good eyesight when I’m hunting fish.”

“I leaned on it in the search.”

Cantellops said he has known Eller for three years and believed it was his turn to help her after the physical therapist assisted him after he broke his foot.

“She has,上海龙凤419jdg, been my home,” he said. “That is why when this happened I got super emotional because she’s been my house and I said ‘I have to find her.'”

Berquist didn’t know El,上海419论坛fg,ler before he rescued her. During the search, the 33-year-old said he relied on his history of survival training and exposure to the military, while his dad was in the US Navy.

“What I learned growing up in the military community is the language of efficiency,” he said.

“I feel like every small problem that came up during the search was a small problem I faced before — like reading maps or making sure everybody had everything, equipment that they needed before they went out searching.”

Helmer who was the most familiar with the land, told CNN affiliate KHON that Eller was out looking for food when she heard the helicopter. “She was about to jump down a 70-foot waterfall and if she would have, she would’ve jumped into a box canyon, and she wasn’t going to come out,” Helmer told the affiliate.

The men said they are elated the story ended happily, instead.

Now, the rescuers are turning their attention to finding others who have gone missing and continuing their search and rescue efforts ac,上海贵族宝贝论坛hk,ross the island.

Sudan protesters begin 2-day strike to press ruling milita 爱上海ry

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan’s protest leaders have launched a two-day general strike to press the ruling military to hand over power to,爱上海ysk, a civilian-led authority.

Wajdi Saleh, a negotiator for the protesters, says they resorted to holding the strike after negotiations with the military council became deadlocked over the makeup and leadership of a sovereign council that would run the country in a three-year transition period.

The Sudanese Professionals’ Association, which spearheaded the protests that led the army to oust President Omar al-Bashir last month, urged people to show up at wor,上海龙凤419zn,k on Tuesday and Wednesday but abstain from any activity.

After the military ousted al-Bashir, who ruled for 30 years, army generals took over the country. But the protesters remained in the streets, demanding the military hand over power.

UN: N. Korea’s Private Jassir Markets Target of Corruption, Human Rights Abuses

North Koreans eking out a living in the country’s thriving, informal private markets are regularly subjected to corruption and various forms of human rights abuses, according to a new United Nations report.

North Korea’s state-run rationing system collapsed in the mid-1990s amid a devastating famine and economic crisis, leading to the creation of unofficial commercial markets in the socialist ,上海千花hup, regime.

The report by the U.N.’s Office of Human Rights says the failure to legitimize these markets has exposed ordinary North Koreans to potential arrest, prosecution and detention. Corrupt, low-paid officials use the threat of arrest to extort bribes from people w,爱上海xj,ith the ability and willingness to pay.

The U.N. report was based on interviews from 214 North Koreans who have defected from th,上海419论坛ou,e regime and resettled in South Korea.

The report blames the situation on the priority the regime places on supporting its military and developing its nuclear weapons program over adequately providing for its people.

上海贵族宝贝论坛Metro riders are finding out what life is like without 6 Virginia stations

Tuesday is the first work day tha,上海419论坛xb,t six stations on Metro’s Blue and Yellow lines south of Reagan National Airport are closed for platform repairs and other upgrades.

The closures that started over the weekend will last until Sept. 8.

The 106 days of closures on the two heavily-trafficked lines are unprecedented, even for Metro shutdowns.

Commuters are sure to be on edge Tuesday morning, when both the effectiveness of Metro’s plan to mitigate delays with free shuttle buses and the stresses on other modes of transportation by commuters seeking alternatives will still be unclear.

This article will be updated throughout Tuesday morning with Metro updates and listener reports on the first commute under the summer shutdown.

San Diego authorities close entire Imperial Bea 上海龙凤论坛ch shoreline over contamination from Mexico

The shoreline of Imperial Beach in San Diego County, California has been closed to swimmers after sewage contamination flowed from Mexico’s Tijuana River.

The San Diego County Department of Environment, Health issued a warning on Sunday, expanding the closure of the southern part of the Imperial Beach to the city’s entire shoreline.

SPILL IN MEXICO SENDING MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF SEWAGE INTO COASTAL WATERS OFF CALIFORNIA

According t,上海419论坛perc,o The San Diego Union-Tribune, over 110 million gallons of toxic storm water has flowed from the Tijuana River since April, while the southern part of the coast along the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge has been closed since November.

The closure of the shoreline will remain until testing shows that the water is safe to swim. Some locals reportedly took it to the streets to pressure the officials to address the water pollution issue, with some reportedly holding signs reading “stop the poop.”

The pollution is becoming increasingly endemic as San Diego often suffers from water rushing across the city picking up trash as the city is based at the end of large watershed that starts in the mountains in and around Tijuana, according to the Union-Tribune.

Dozens killed in riots in Brazilian prisons Trianno plagued by drug gangs

Brazilian riot police prepare to invade the Puraquequara Prison facility at Bela Vista community, Puraquequara neighborhood, in the city of Manaus, Amazonas state on May 27, 2019. Getty

Rio De Janeiro — Forty-two inmates were killed at three different prisons in the capital of Brazil’s northern Amazonas state Monday, authorities reported, a day after 15 died during fighting among prisoners at a fourth prison in the same city. The Amazonas state prison agency said all 42 prisoners found dead in Manaus on Monday showed signs of asphyxia.

The killings across the city’s prisons recalled early 2017 when more than 120 inmates died at the hands of other prisoners during several weeks of fighting among rival crime gang members at prisons in northern states. Many of those victims had their heads cut off or their hearts and intestines ripped out.

On Sunday, 15 inmates wer,上海千花xqma,e killed during a riot a,上海龙凤论坛if,t Manaus’ Anisio Jobim Prison Complex, where 56 prisoners died in the violence two years earlier.

Local authorities said prisoners began fighting among themselves before noon Sunday, and security reinforcements were rushed in and managed to regain control within 45 minutes.

Little information was released about Monday’s killings.

Brazil’s justice and public security ministry said it was sending a federal task force to help local officials handle the situation.

“I just spoke with (Justice) Minister Sergio Moro, who is already sending a prison intervention team to the State of Amazonas, so that he can help us in this moment of crisis and a ,爱上海cmlg, problem that is national: the problem of prisons,” Amazonas state Gov. Wilson Lima said.

Several drug-trafficking and other criminal gangs in Brazil run much of their day-to-day business from prisons, where they often have wide sway. The 2017 slayings were largely gang-related, prompting authorities to increase efforts to separate factions and frequently transfer prisoners.

Authorities have not yet said whether gang wars were behind the latest blood-letting.

Moro had to send a federal task force to help tame violence in Ceara state in January that local officials said was ordered by crime gang leaders angered by plans to impose tighter controls in the state’s prisons.

France seeks to save IS jih 上海贵族宝贝论坛adis from death penalties in Iraq

PARIS (AP) — France’s foreign minister says his government is working to spare four French former members of the Islamic State group from execution after Iraq sentenced them to death.

However, France has made no effort to bring back captured French IS fighters, in,上海419论坛ex,cluding the four sentenced this week.

Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian reiterated France’s position on Tuesday, saying the four terrorists should be tried where they committed their crimes.

But he said on France-Inter radio that “we are multiplying efforts to avoid the death penalty for these four French people.”

He didn’t elaborate, but said he spoke to Iraq’s president about the case. France is outspoken against the death penalty globally.

There’s been controversy about the legal treatment of thousands of foreign fighters who joined IS in Syria and Iraq.
