Deadly pesticide in temple food that killed 15 in India

NEW DELHI ( ) – A toxic pesticide that a U.N. agency wanted India to ban a decade ago contaminated food that killed at least 15 people at a temple last week, police said on Tuesday.

Mor上海龙凤419e than 100 also had to go to hospital after devotees consumed portions of tomato rice blessed at the Hindu temple in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

A senior police officer told laboratory tests showed the presence of monocrotophos – a pesticide which attacks the nerves – in food and vomit samples.

“We are trying to find out how the food got contaminated and not ruling out foul play. We have detained a few people and are enquiring further,” said Chamrajnagar district police superintendent Dharmender Kumar Meena, without specifying the number of arrests.

The same pesticide was responsible for the death of 23 schoolchildren in the eastern state of Bihar in 2013, one of India’s worst mass poisonings.

That was caused by cooking oil kept in a container previously used to store monocr,上海419论坛官方网站Nadine,otophos.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), swallowing just 120 milligrams of monocrotophos – the weight of about five grains of rice – can be fatal.

In a 2009 report, the U.N. health agency urged India to ban the pesticide, as the United S,爱上海同城aishBarney, tates, European Union and various other Asian nations have done.

Its import is now illegal in at least 46 countries.

But India plans to continue allowing its use in non-vegetable crops because it i,上海千花网Ebba,s effective and cheaper than alternatives, said a senior government official.

Monocrotophos costs only about 50 rupees (70 U.S. cents) a kg, while a similar patented alternative would cost as much as 20,000 rupees, said Pranjib Kumar Chakrabarty, assistant director general of the state-run Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

“Farmers want to keep using it,” Chakrabarty told . “It’s safe as long as best practices are followed and they are not used in vegetables.”

Monocrotophos controls a range of pests from aphids to caterpillars, mites, moths, stem borers and locusts on crops such as cotton, rice and sugarcane. Poisoning symptoms can include sweating, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision and foaming at the mouth.

White House ex-counsel now off of Attorney General list

WASHINGTON ( ) – Former White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, a leading candidate in President Barack Obama’s search for a new U.S. attorney general, has pulled out of consideration for the nomination, a White House official said on Friday.

Ruemmler, who informed Obama in a phone call on Wednesday, faced the possibility of a difficult Senate confirmation battle over her involvement in a host of White House issues that stirred controversy in politically polarized Washington.

Obama, who thinks highly of Ruemmler, had approached the Washington lawyer to see if he could put her on his shortlist for replacing Holder, who has announced he will leave his post when a successor is found.

“Kathy took this step this week on her own volition,” the White House official said.

Ruemmle,爱上海Ines,r declined to comment.

Some Republican lawmakers have raised questions about an internal White House investigation led by Ruemmler into an April 2012 Secret Service prostitution scandal in Cartagena, Colombia.

During her tenure as the top White House lawyer, she was also involved in a variety of other issues that became controversial, such as a scandal involving the 上海龙凤419Internal Revenue Service and the deaths of three Americans at a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya.

“I believe that there ,上海千花网Paula, was a perception that the confirmation difficulties might have been insurmountable,” said a former administration official familiar with the situation.

U.S. Solicitor General Don Verrilli, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Loretta Lynch and Labor Secretary Tom Perez are among the other candidates on Obama’s list for the job.

Holder announced his decision to step down on Sept. 25. Obama will not announce a nominee until after the Nov. 4 elections, a delay sought by some Senate Democrats who wanted to avoid another controversy ahead of the vote.

“Once the president has identified a candidate, we will build a confirmation strategy around the nominee and that includes questions of timing,” the official said.

White House chief of staff Denis McDonough heaped praise on Ruemmler in comments released by the White House, saying she remains a trusted adviser to the president and is “as selfless as they come.”

U.S. court rejects Maine’s effort to trim Medicaid rolls

BRUNSWICK Maine ( ) – A federal appeals court on Monday rejected Maine’s effort to trim some young people from its Medicaid rolls, saying the move would violate the Affordable Care Act.

Maine Republican Governor Paul LePage, a critic of President Barack O爱上海419bama’s signature healthcare law, which is also known as Obamacare, had proposed in 2012 cutting non-disabled 19- and 20-year-olds from the state’s Medicaid program to help balanc,上海千花网Darrell,e the budget.

A judge on the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said on Monday the move would violate a key provision of the Affordable,上海龙凤419Naomi, Care Act that forbids states from tightening Medicaid eligibility requirements for at least nine years.

Chief Judge Sandra Lea Lynch wrote that the provision served “the legitimate purpose of ensuring that children do not lose health insurance as the country transitions from the pre-ACA Medicaid regime to the post-ACA Medicaid regime.”

Medicaid is a government health insurance program for low-income and disabled people.

Maine is one of several states that have challenged Obamacare in court, and congressional Republicans, bolstered by big wins in midterm elections, have pledged to renew attacks on the law.

“Today, judges have gone out of their way to defend the unpopular Obamacare law and obstruct the will of the public, made clear two weeks ago,” Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew said.

She said welfare funds should be directed toward the “truly needy, not job-ready adults.”

Cutting the Medicaid rolls would have saved Maine $3.7 million, according to the LePage administration, which wants to slash $220 million in healthcare spending overall.

Macron to discuss Syria, Iran and Ukraine with Putin on Sunday: Elysee

PARIS ( ) – French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss Syria, Iran and Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin when they meet in Moscow on Sunday, the day of the soccer World Cup final between France and Croatia, a source at the French president’s office said.

Macron and Putin are expected to meet at the Kremlin before the kick-off.

The Elysee Palace source said the situation in Ukraine had not evolved enough for Macron to invite Putin to a Group of Seven summit in Biarritz, in the south of France, in the summer of 2019.

Following the G7 summit in Canada, Macron had said he would like to invite his Putin to Biarritz, but that it would depend on Russia’s app爱上海lication of the process agreed in Minsk with France, Germany and Ukraine to resolve the conflict,上海419论坛Abril, in Ukraine.

The source said the discussion would also be an opportunity for both leaders to draw their positions on the Syrian crisis closer.

On Iran, Macron urged Trump in vain earlier this year not to pull out of a,上海千花网Ilya,n international deal that eased sanctions against Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear program.

A Kremlin official said on Friday that Macron was also expected to brief Putin on the recent NATO summit, and that they would discuss Putin’s impending meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Helsinki on Monday.

Turkey’s Erdogan wins presidential election, opposition yet to concede

ANKARA ( ) – Tayyip Erdogan won Turkey’s presidential election on Sunday, the head of the country’s electoral body said, overcoming the biggest electoral challenge to his rule in a decade and a half.

Electoral board Chairman Sadi Guven said that with more than 97 percent of votes counted, Erdogan had an absolute majority. Unofficial results broadcast on Turkish television also gave his ruling party and its alliance partner a majority in parliament.

The main opposition party did not immediately concede defeat. But after initially saying Erdogan would fall well short of a first-round victory, it said simply it would continue its democratic struggle “whatever the result”.

“Starting tomorrow, we will start working to realize the promises we made our people,” Erdogan told flag-waving supporters in a victory speech delivered from the balcony of his ruling AK Party’s headquarters in Ankara shortly after 3 a.m.

He also pledged that authorities, who have waged a nationwide crackdown since a failed military coup two years ago, would act more decisively against terrorist organizations.

Erdogan, 64, the most popular but also the most divisive politician in modern Turkey, added that Turkish forces would continue to “liberate Syrian lands” so that the 3.5 million Syrian refugees in Turkey could return home safely.

Sunday’s vote ushered in a powerful new executive presidency long sought by Erdogan and backed by a small majority of Turks in a 2017 referendum. Critics say it will further erode democracy in the NATO member state and entrench one-man rule.

Erdogan’s victory paves the way for,上海贵族宝贝论坛Rebel, another five-year term. Under the new constitution, he could serve a further term from 2023, taking him to 2028.

U.N. to present plan for Mediterranean migrant centers for EU

LUXEMBOURG ( ) – The United Nations agencies for migration and refugees will present the European Union with a plan for “regional disembarkation platforms” around the Mediterranean where the bloc could hold migrants and decide whether to admit them.

The plan appears to have fairly broad support in an EU now bitterly split over immigration policy, although countries have yet to settle on the details.

Europe’s migration crisis, which peaked with the arrival of more than 1 million asylum seekers in 2015, has been tapering off with arrivals falling to the tens of thousands so far this year. But the issue has taken on new political urgency in ,上海419论坛Belinda,recent weeks as anti-immigrant parties make their influence felt.

A new government in Italy is refusing to allow charities that rescue migrants at sea to dock ships on its shores, and migration policy has threatened to divide Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition in Germany.

EU leaders will hold a summit later this week to discuss more measures to curb arrival numbers, including by tightening external borders and giving more aid to countries from Turkey to Libya to help them prevent people from setting sail for Europe.

One new idea is for “regional disembarkation platforms” where the EU would take in people saved from boats crossing the Mediterranean, assess their asylum requests and hold those whose applications fail before they are sent back.

Various EU爱上海419 states have expressed differing opinions of what such centers could comprise. France has said Italy could host them; Italy wants them to sit in Africa.

A similar plan for “Africa hot spots” proposed two years ago by one of Europe’s most hardline anti-immigrant leaders, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, was widely criticized as potentially violating rights of those who attempt the crossing.

The initiative still poses legal, security and rights challenges but EU leaders now want the two U.N. bodies – the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – to make a proposal and run such sites in the future with EU money.

Another challenge is finding a state that would want to host such centers. Migrant camps run by Tripoli in Libya – where the U.N. also works with EU money to assist people – have been heavily criticized for horrid conditions.

Before EU leaders meet over migration in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, UNHCR chief Filipo Grandi said in a letter he wanted to discuss with them “new collaborative arrangements, within and outside the EU”.

“UNHCR is currently preparing a proposal in this respect, together with the International Organization for Migration, which we will share with you shortly,” Grandi said in his letter, dated June 18 and seen by on Tuesday.

The IOM and UNHCR did not immediately reply to request for comment.

Italy’s new populist government has refused entry in recent days to two rescue ships with hundreds of people aboard. Spain took in one; Malta is now expected to let in the other.

Italy has long been overwhelmed with arrivals and is now together with governments such as Austria and Hungary pushing tougher anti-immigration policies for the whole of the EU.

U.N,上海419论坛Ferdinand,. data shows some 43,000 people arrived to the EU across the Mediterranean this year. More than one thousand perished in trying to make the crossing.

Moldovan tycoon criticizes court action he’s accused of instigating

CHISINAU ( ) – A Moldovan politician and businessman accused of instigating a court action to void the result of the Chisinau mayoral election said on Tuesday the court’s decision set a dangerous precedent but advised against overturning it.

The capital has been rocked by daily protests, including on Monday, when the Supreme Court upheld a June 19 decision overturning the victory of pro-transparency candidate Andrei Nastase because of unspecified violations.

Nastase says the ruling was done at the bidding of Vlad Plahotniuc, the Democratic Party leader and powerful businessman, whom many Moldovans say has excessive influence over the government, police and media.

In his first p,爱上海Taryn, ublic comment on the scandal, Plahotniuc criticized the courts’ decision.

“The decision not to recognize the election is extremely dangerous, since it cannot be ruled out that the situation could be repeated at the upcoming parliamentary election,” he told the Moldovan online newspaper Timpul, referring to a vote in October.

But he advised against attempting to overturn the ruling: “Asking the government to solve the problem by participating in the administration of 上海419论坛justice would be just as dangerous and unfair.”

Nastase, a former prosecutor who has led a movement demanding greater transparency and accountability, won 52.5 percent of the votes in the June 3 election.

His supporters have staged daily protests against the court decisions, including a gathering of several thousand in Chisinau on Sunday.

The cancelling of Nastase’s win has drawn sharp rebukes from the United States and the European Union. In comments on Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Moldova said it was important for elections to comply with international norms.

“Judicial independence is a key democratic principle, and today’s ruling has reinforced the public’s perception of political interference in the judiciary,” it said.

The case has brought more political turmoil for a country that plunged into crisis following a $1 billion banking fraud in 2015, enduring successive government collapses and frequent conflict between the president and the government.

Plahotniuc,上海贵族宝贝论坛Calista,, who is president of Moldova’s ruling Democratic Party, has previously said negative perceptions about him were caused by lies spread by his opponents after he entered politics.
