Morocco arrests Swiss national in connection with killing of…

RABAT ( ) – Morocco arrested a Swiss national on Saturday in connection with the killing of two Scandinavian women, the counter-terrorism agency said.

Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway were found dead early on Dec. 17 near the village of Imlil in the Atlas Mountains.

The man arrested is also suspected of “involvement in recruiting Moroccan and,上海419对对碰Quaid, sub-Saharan nationals to carry out terrorist plots in Morocco against foreign targets and security forces in order to take hold of their service weapons”, the Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) said.

It said he also held Spanish nationality with residence in Morocco.

Nineteen other men hav,上海419论坛Pablo,e been arrested in connection with the case, inclu爱上海ding four main suspects who had pledged allegiance to Islamic State in a video made three days before the tourists’ bodies were found.

Police an,上海千花论坛官网Cade,d domestic intelligence spokesman Boubker Sabik this week described the four men as “lone wolves”, and said “the crime was not coordinated with Islamic State”.

Compared with other countries in North Africa, Morocco has been largely insulated from militant attacks.

The most recent took place in April 2011, when 17 people were killed in the bombing of a restaurant in Marrakech. In 2017 and 2018, Morocco said it dismantled 20 militant cells planning attacks in the country.

Leader of Iran sanctions group launches non-profit to fight terror…

NEW YORK ( ) – The leader of a Manhattan-based non-profit that tries to put pressure on Iran by publicly criticizing people and firms who do business there announced on Monday he is launching a new non-profit devoted to tracking terrorist financing.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after an unusual move by the U.S. government to intervene in a private lawsuit against the group, United Against Nuclear Iran.

Mark Wallace, chief executive of UANI, said his new group, called the Counter Extremism Project, will employ teams of translators and researchers to identify terrorist organizations around the world along with their financial backers. It will then use pu爱上海419blicity campaigns to name and shame the backers.

Wallace’s group UANI has been employing a similar name,爱上海Jared,-and-shame strategy to keep people and companies from doing business with Iran until UANI is satisfied that Iran has abandoned any nuclear weapons ambitions. A Greek businessman, Victor Restis, sued UANI in federal court last year for defamation after the group claimed Restis had been exporting oil from Iran.

On Sept. 12, lawyers for the U.S. Justice Department moved to have that case dismissed, making a rare intervention in a private lawsuit and invoking the state secrets privilege.

The Justice Department lawyers claimed the suit could “cause harm to national security” if it were allowed to proceed. They did not offer any description of the nature of the secret information that might be revealed in the case.

“We want to harness the tools and lessons of many of the groups that have come before us,” Wallace said at a press conference announcing the launch of the Counter Extremism Project.

He said the group, which already has operations in New York and Brussels, planned to open more offices around the world. He said it would try to “partner” with governments and “supplement” their efforts to combat terrorism, but did not give details about how that would happen.

Wallace said the group will use publicly available information as well as subscription-based data services to identify and track sources of terrorist financing.

He said private donors were funding the new group, but he declined to reveal their identities or the identities of UANI’s backers, saying his decision not to disclose them was “really about safety and security rather than secrecy.”

UANI and the Counter Extremism Project will have offices in the same space in Manhattan, Wallace said. The groups share some of the same advisory board members, including Gary Samore, the former White House Coordinator for Arms Control and WMD Terrorism, and August Hanning, the former direct,上海贵族宝贝论坛Sammy,or of Germany’s federal intelligence service.

Fate of jihadists will make or break Idlib peace plan

ANKARA ( ) – The Russian-Turkish agreement to avert a Syrian government offensive against Idlib hinges on the response of jihadist fighters in the region and could unravel quickly if Moscow and Ankara cannot jointly impose their plan on the Islamist groups.

Turkey, desperate to avoid all-out conflict and a humanitarian crisis on its southern border, forged the surprise deal with Russia on Monday to set up a demilitarized zone around Idlib, staving off an imminent attack.

Ankara has for months called for a t,爱上海Katrina, argeted campaign against the jihadists who control parts of Idlib, instead of a broad offensive against a region which is also home to 3 million civilians and tens of thousands of Turkey-backed rebels.

The deal announced in Sochi after talks between Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, a strong backer of the Damascus government, and President Tayyip Erdogan gives Turkey the opportunity to put that proposal into effect.

However time is short – the two leaders want to set up the demilitarized zone by mid-October – and it is not clear how they will enforce their plan to disarm and remove hardline Islamist insurgents.

Announcing the deal, Putin said the zone will run along the frontline separating rebel-held Idlib and Syrian government forces. “Radical militants” will withdraw and heavy weapons will be removed from them and other opposition groups, he said.

The Russian president did not say how the radical groups would be persuaded to cooperate, or where they might be sent.

Turkey has a dozen military posts in the Idlib region and announced last October that it would isolate “terror groups” from “moderate rebels” there. Nearly a year on, it has little to show for its effort, and analysts say it is not clear how Monday’s agreement will change prospects.

“I have to say this is a very, very small possibility,” said Metin Gurcan, a security analyst and retired Turkish military officer, adding that the jihadist would be persuaded only through a show of strength rather than dialogue.

The most powerful rebel force in Idlib is Tahrir al-Sham, a coalition of Islamist groups made up of Syrian and foreign fighters and dominated by the former al Qaeda affiliate known as Nusra Front.

Putin named Nusra as one of the groups which would be targeted by the measures, but neither he nor Erdogan identified which other Islamist fighters could be affected. Turkey said on Tuesday it would discuss the matter with Russia, suggesting that no agreement has been reached.

One diplomat who follows Syria forecast that the Sochi deal would only stabilize Idlib for a few months. “It is just a postponement of the question that does not have a crystal clear solution,” the diplomat said.

For the foreign jihadists, Idlib is the last haven in Syria after President Bashar al-Assad, backed by his allies Russia and Iran, reversed years of rebel gains and drove his opponents from remaining pockets in southern and western parts of the country.

“The main problem is the foreign fighters, they have nowhere to go,” said Sinan Ulgen, a former Turkish diplomat and analyst with Carnegie Europe.

Ulgen said Turkey appeared to be pinning its hopes on possible splits among the jihadists, with Syrian fighters more amenable to disarming than the foreigners.

“The main principle is divide and rule, attempting to separate, at the granular le爱上海419vel, the different constituencies,” Ulgen said. “They may all be jihadists, but they may have different inclinations in terms of this demilitarization.”

An insurgent source in Idlib said there were different views emerging within Tahrir al-Sham over whether to cooperate.

The group’s stance is crucial because once its decision-making Shura Council rules on the issue, Tahrir al-Sham wields enough power to impose its will on other jihadist fighters in Idlib, including foreigners, the source said.

“If there is an agreement between Tahrir al-Sham and Turkey, the matter will proceed easily,” the source said.

Ankara designated the group a terrorist organization last month, but the source said there were indications that Turkey and Tahrir al-Sham could cooperate on the ground, noting the ease with which Turkish military convoys pass through Idlib.

The United Nations Syria envoy has said there ar,上海千花网Mace,e thought to be around 10,000 Nusra fighters in Idlib. There are other Islamist and groups fighting under the Free Syrian Army banner. With Turkish backing, they are now gathered under the “National Front for Liberation.”

Gurcan said the Sochi agreement had granted Turkey a brief respite until the Oct. 15 planned implementation, but Russia would not hold back forever from tackling a region it calls a “nest of terrorists”.

“Ankara has bought one month, and Russia has given it this time period. However Moscow is doing this for the last time,” he said. “How is Ankara going to use that one-month period?”

Exclusive – Hammond urged EU peers to help Britain cope with…

BRUSSELS ( ) – Britain’s Chancellor urged the European Commission to help devise European contingency plans for the financial sector in case of no deal on Brexit, pointing to growing concerns a,上海龙凤419Damian,bout a disorderly departure from the European Union.

Philip Hammond made his plea at the beginning of this month at a meeting of EU finance ministers in Vienna, according to an EU official with direct knowledge of the matter.

He called on the Commission to engage on preparing plans that could reduce or avoid disruption to the financial sector in case of a ‘hard’ Brexit.

European Union leaders warned Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday that if she did not give ground on negotiations over trade and the Irish border by November, they are ready to cope with Britain crashing out of the bloc.

Hammond was most concerned that, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, financial contracts could be rendered invalid. Although he insisted Britain was still committed to reaching a deal, he acknowledged the risks of there being no agreement before March, the source said.

A spokesman for the British treasury said following the report: “During the discussion on financial stability with fellow EU finance ministers, the Chancellor stressed the need for the UK and EU to work together to mitigate the risks posed by a disorderly Brexit.”

EU financial services commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said at that meeting that work was under way to address爱上海419 “possible” prob,上海419论坛Eleanor,lems, according to the EU official. But he played down Hammond’s concerns about the continuity of financial contracts, saying he expected limited problems.

The argument mirrored an earlier clash between the Commission and the Bank of England over contingency planning.

Brussels is saying it is up to supervisors and firms to adapt to Brexit.

The Bank of England has called this approach “impractical” and said 82 billion pounds of insurance liabilities involving 48 million policyholders could be disrupted across Britain and the European Economic Area.

Derivatives worth a notional 26 trillion pounds are also likely to be affected by Brexit.

India’s Supreme Court to test live-streaming of cases

NEW DELHI ( ) – India’s Supreme Court decided on Wednesday it would start live-streaming some of its cases in a bid to increase transparency and prevent overcrowding in the courtrooms.

Indian courts are open to the public but do not allow video recording or broadcasting. A three-judge bench at the Supreme Court, ruling on litigation seeking such a move, said a pilot project would be launched and developed over time.

“Live-streaming of court proceedings is manifestly in public interest,” the court said in its 106-page order.

“It can epitomize transparency, good governance and accountability, and more importantly, open the vista of the court rooms.”

At first, only a few specific,上海419论坛Benton, cases of constitutional and national importance will be live-streamed, after obtaining consent from the litigants.

Initially the video will be streamed to screens in other areas within the court complex. The plan would later allow live-streaming over the internet.

The court asked the federal government to frame rules for the project, said Shraddha Deshmukh, a government lawyer involved in the case.

Some sensitive cases上海419论坛, such as those related t,上海419论坛Edward,o sexual assault or child abuse, would be excluded, Deshmukh told .

The measure will also allow litigants to follow some parts of the proceedings from home without having to travel long distances. The Supreme Court had 54,013 pending cases as of May this year, according to data available on its website.

Keystone Senate vote hangs in balance after Obama remarks

WASHINGTON ( ) – Supporters of the Keystone XL pipeline in the U.S. Senate scrambled on Monday to gather one last vote to pass a bill that authorizes the project that would help send Canadian oil to the U.S. Gulf, a task that became harder after President Barack Obama made his toughest comments yet on the topic.

Momentum appeared to be going against the controversial pipeline as Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia told reporters late on Monday that he would vote against it on Tuesday.

At the same time, Democratic Senator Carl Levin of Michigan also proclaimed to reporters, “I’m voting no,” and independent Senator Angus King of Maine said he “probably” would vote against approving the oil pipeline. King added that he would make his final decision during the vote “when they get to the Ks” in the roll-call.

The three senators we,爱上海419Camilla,re being heavily lobbied by pipeline backers. Rockefeller and Levin are retiring at year’s end and some had thought they could be persuaded to vote yes in a vote that appears to be going down to the wire on Tuesday.

Senator Mary Landrieu, a Louisiana Democrat, is co-sponsoring the bill with Republican Senator John Hoeven of North Dakota. She faces a runoff for another six-year term next month and has been working hard to gather the 60th vote needed to pass a bill that the House of Representatives approved on Friday.

The Senate is expected to vote as early as 6:15 p.m. EST (2315 GMT) on Tuesday on TransCanada Corp’s project that would transport more than 800,000 barrels per day of oil.

All 45 Senate Republicans support the pipeline, so backers need 15 Democrats t上海龙凤419o reach the 60 votes needed under an agreement outlining the rules for debating and passing the bill.

Obama criticized the project during a trip to Asia late last week, saying it would not lower fuel prices for drivers, but would allow Canada to “pump their oil, send it through our land, down to the Gulf, where it will be sold everywhere else.”

His adviser John Podesta,上海贵族宝贝论坛Sabina, reiterated Obama’s message in a call with reporters on Monday: “I would just repeat what he said, which is we ought to take the time to let the process play out and let the analysis come in.”

The State Department has been studying the pipeline proposal, and its approval is needed because the project crosses an international border.

Republicans and energy analysts said those comments likely meant Obama was leaning toward vetoing any Keystone bill that passes, either this year or early next year.

“The president … is basically threatening a veto this time,” said Ryan Bernstein, an aide to Hoeven. “Obviously, this makes it harder to gather votes.”

Businesses push IRS to reduce data reporting under Obamacare

WASHINGTON ( ) – The Internal Revenue Service is under pressure from some businesses to reduce the information they may soon have to collect and report to the IRS under the health law known as Obamacare, including the birth dates and Social Security numbers of employees’ children.

The IRS will be issuing tax penalties to businesses and individuals who fail to obtain health coverag,爱上海Leandra,e. The data will help verify that businesses and individuals are telling the truth about their healthcare coverage under the law.

Business lobbying groups, including the Business Roundtable, a chief executives’ association, are asking for drastic cutbacks in the data that the IRS cannot legally provide on its own, said some lawyers 上海419论坛ahead of IRS hearings set for Monday and Tuesday on these proposed rules.

“It’s a huge ask,” said Vanessa Scott, a partner at law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, of the requests. “The IRS needs as much information as possible about everyone … Without it, the IRS is at a serious disadvantage.”

One lawyer, speaking anonymously to protect his relationship with IRS officials, said the business requests for data cutbacks were “dead on arrival.” IRS officials will likely show limited flexibility in the final rules, he said.

The IRS declined to comment ahead of the hearings.

Starting in 2014, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires that Americans have health insurance coverage or pay a fine. The Obama administration in July delayed until 2015 the penalties and reporting requirements for businesses.

People already getting insurance through their employers are likely to continue to do so under Obamacare, but the law also set up online insurance marketplaces for people to purchase their own coverage as part of efforts to extend health benefits to millions of uninsured Americans.

One lobbying group called the E-FLEX Coalition, representing retail, construction and other service companies, wants employers to report information only about employees getting a federal tax credit to subsidize their healthcare coverage costs.

This would sharply reduce the volume of information to be reported. “A less expansive approach to information reporting can achieve the same ends with fewer burdens,” E-FLEX said in a November 6 comment letter.

The IRS hearings come at a tough time for President Barack Obama and his signature domestic policy achievement.

Persistent problems ,上海贵族宝贝论坛Fabiana, with the balky HealthCare.gov website, and workarounds to fulfill Obama’s pledge that holders of individual plans can keep their coverage, have kept the administration and Democrats on the healthcare defensive. The problems have given ammunition to Republicans who have pressed to dismantle Obamacare.

It is unclear when the IRS will finish the reporting rules, which also call for it to get information from employers about the quality and cost of coverage businesses must offer.

The IRS might be limited in the changes it can make because the agency has already started writing software to implement the healthcare law, lawyers and accountants said.

Thailand’s cave boys to be discharged from hospital on Thursday

CHIANG RAI, Thailand ( ) – Twelve Thai boys and their soccer coach rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand are recovering well from the ordeal and will be discharged from hospital next week, health minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said on Saturday.

The last of the 12-member “Wild Boars” soccer team and their coach were brought out of the Tham Luang cave, near the border with Myanmar, on Tuesday night, safely ending a perilous rescue and evoking international relief and joy.

The boys and their coach have been in hospital in the northern town of Chiang Rai since they were brought to safety.

In a video played at a news conference on Saturday, they appeared well, sitting up in bed and thanking their rescuers. Some said they were looking forward to eating their favorite food such as pork fried rice and sushi.

“I want to have crispy pork rice and barbecue pork rice,” Pipat Photi, 15, said in the video.

“I want pork knuckle rice,” said Duangpetch Promtep, 13. “Thank you for all the moral support.”

Some of the boys lost as much as 5 kg (11 lb) but had started to regain weight in hospital, Piyasakol told reporters. Those who were suffering pneumonia after the rescue have also recovered and all,爱上海419Gabe, 13 should leave hospital on Thursday, he said

“I am in good health now,” said one of the boys, a 14-year-old nicknamed Note. “Thanks for saving me.”

The boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach had planned to explore the cavern complex for about an hour after soccer practice on June 23. But a rainy season downpour flooded the tunnels, trapping them.

Two British divers found them on July 2, squatting on a mound in a flooded chamber several kilometers inside the complex. Rescuers then had to work out how to get them out through the tunnels, some of which were full of fast-flowing floodwater.

All 13 were brought to safety over the course of a three-day rescue, organized by Thai navy SEALs and an international team of cave-diving experts.

Samarn Kunan, 38, a former member of the elite SEALs unit, was the only casualty in the operation. His wife has urged the boys not to blame themselves for his death.

Samarn was cremated on Saturday in a special ceremony sponsored by the Thai royal family which was broadcast live on local television.

He was also posthumously promoted and awarded a royal medal for his bravery and contribution to the rescue, according to a statement published on Saturday in the Thai Royal Gazette.

At the scene of the rescue, 4,000 volunteers arrived on Saturday to help clean up and “restore the landscape” in and around the cave complex, according to a statement from the Chiang Rai provincial office.

While the boys and their coach are now in good health, there is concern about how they will deal with their fame, given the huge attention on the case within Thailand and beyond.

Their story is already set for a retelling by Hollywood, with two production companies looking to put together movies about the boys and their rescue.

“We need to prepare both the children and their families for the attention they will receive,” Piyasakol said.

He warned relatives of the boys to resist giving interviews to media over fear,上海贵族宝贝论坛Patricia,s they could have a negative impact on thei上海419论坛r mental health.

“Everyone has worked well together to bring the children out. We worked well together then and we should work well together now so the children can recover physically and mentally as they grow up,” Piyasakol said.

Turkey’s Erdogan says may seek coalition if fails to get majority

ISTANBUL ( ) – Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said his ruling AK Party could seek to form a coalition if it fails to secure a parliamentary majority in Sunday’s elections, a prospect which has unsettled investors who fear it could lead to political deadlock.

Polls indicate elections may be closer than anticipated when Erdogan called the snap elections in April, suggesting he may be p,爱上海419Carly,ushed to a second-round run-off for the presidency, and his AKP could lose its majority in the 600-seat assembly.

While investors have been spooked by what they see as Erdogan’s growing authoritarianism, the prospect of political deadlock is also seen as a negative, as it causes uncertainty, making it difficult to gauge the investment outlook.

“If it is under 300 (seats), then there could be a search for a coalition,” Erdogan said in an interview with the Kral FM radio station late on Wednesday.

He added that the probability of this was “very, very low”.

Erdogan has long argued that a stronger presidential system — d,上海千花网Randy,ue to go into effect after the election — is a guarantee against the fractious coalition politics that hampered the Turkish government in the 1990s.

The lira dipped 0.6 percent to 4.76 against the dollar by 1000 GMT. The currency has slumped more than 20 percent this year, and has been hit this week by concern about potential political uncertainty.

A compromise would be sought if the opposition obtains a majority, Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek, the minister charged with oversight of the economy, said.

The AKP formed an alliance with the nationalist MHP before the elections. The ruling party has held a majority in parliament for nearly all of its almost 16 years in power, only losing it in the June 2015 election. But parties failed to form a coalition then and Erdogan called a fresh election in November, restoring the AKP majority.

The leader of the nationalist MHP said on Monday another election could be held if his alliance with the AKP could not form a majority in parliament after Sunday’s vote.

Opposition parties also formed an alliance, which excluded the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). If the pro-Kurdish party exceeds the 10 percent threshold of votes needed to enter parliament, it will be harder for the AKP to achieve a majority.

In the presidential election, opinion polls on average put Erdogan around 20 percentage points ahead of his nearest challenger, Muharrem Ince of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

However, if the election goes to a second round between the two candidates who get the most votes, parties in the “Nation Alliance” that includes the CHP have signaled they will call on voters to support the alliance’s second-round candidate.

Ince has said he would offer vice presidential roles to leaders of the other parties in their alliance.

He has reached out to the HDP during his campaign, visiting its presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtas in jail. Ince’s wife paid a visit to Demirtas’ wife during a visit to Diyarbakir, the largest city in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

Although it traditionally has little support in the southeast, the HDP stronghold, Ince’s rally in Diyarbakir attracted a large crowd. Erdogan 上海龙凤419said he received intelligence indicating nearly all those attending were HDP supporters.

CHP deputy chair Unal Cevikoz, a former ambassador to Britain, told that if the opposition obtains a majority of parliamentary seats the opposition candidate would have a better chance in a second round of the presidential race.

It is unclear whether other opposition voters would rally around Ince in the second round, however, given traditional misgivings about the CHP among opposition nationalist, conservative and Kurdish voters.

Under the constitutional changes going into effect after the elections, the number of lawmakers in parliament will increase to 600 from 550 currently.

Scourge of Mexico establishment poised to capture presidency

MEXICO CITY ( ) – For 13 years, Mexico’s perennial political outsider Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has covered tens of thousands of miles crisscrossing the nation in dogged pursuit of its highest office.

Now the 64-year-old leftist is on the brink of winning Sunday’s presidential election, having spent his political career railing against Mexico’s establishment.

Years of mounting drug violence, sluggish economic growth and corruption have gradually eroded the credibility of the political class, leaving Lopez Obrador as the last man standing.

Pledging to clean up government, reduce inequality and subdue gang violence, he promises to “transform” a country he says has been debased by the few at the expense of the many.

Commonly known as AMLO, Lopez Obrador has bounced back from two presidential election defeats, two gubernatorial losses and a 2013 heart attack to defy his critics with an unshakeable faith in his ability to tackle Mexico’s ills.

“We’re the only ones that can put an end to corruption in Mexico,” Lopez Obrador told supporters this year in Cintalapa, a town in the impoverished south of the country.

Few politicians have established such a connection with the millions of underprivileged families in Mexico as Lopez Obrador, a baseball fan who regularly campaigns festooned with garlands, flowers and gaudy sombreros from provincial rural communities.

Like U.S. President Donald Trump, the headstrong Lopez Obrador has been the heart and soul of his movement, and victory for him on July 1 could heighten tensions between Mexico and the United States over trade and migration if the two men clash.

The prospect of a showdown between the blunt Lopez Obrador and Trump over the planned U.S.-Mexico border wall and the American’s efforts to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has both friends and enemies worried.

“There’s going to be a,上海贵族宝贝论坛Malia, clash of vanities, a clash of egos, and who knows where it will end,” said Juan Jose Rodriguez Prats, a former party colleague, friend and later adversary of Lopez Obrador who has known him for 40 years.

Born into a family of modest means in the southeastern state of Tabasco, Lopez Obrador worked in the 1970s for the state’s indigenous affairs bureau.

At times, he would sleep in the open if he did not make it back home with the indigenous villagers by nightfall.

Once his bastions were across the south. Now, however, he has extended his support into the richer north.

First a member of outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), he quit the PRI in the 1980s and twice failed to be elected Tabasco’s governor, staging a protest march to the capital after his second loss in 1994.

That raised his profile at a time of growing opposition to the PRI, and in 2000 he was elected mayor of Mexico City, where his administration was widely viewed as pragmatic, providing a springboard for his first tilt at the presidency.

Narrowly defeated in the 2006 election, he again claimed he had been robbed. Lopez Obrador then brought large swathes of the capital to a standstill for weeks with huge demonstrations, and declared himself the legitimate president of Mexico.

The protests fizzled out and he began campaigning all over Mexico, speaking in villages that had not seen any political leaders in years, sometimes to only a handful of people, said Polimnia Romana Sierra, one of his aides from 2003 to 2011.

“He spoke with the same energy under a tree in front of 10 people as he did in the full Zocalo,” Sierra said, referring to the square in the heart of Mexico City that holds about 100,000 people. “Nobody works the microphone like him.”

He became so famous that a village in the southern state of Oaxaca put up road blocks to make him stop there, hailing him as the first politician to visit since Lazaro Cardenas, a hero of AMLO’s who nationalized the oil industry in 1938, she said.

“They made (Lopez Obrador) dance with a little old lady,” she recalled. Another,爱上海419Katie, village pulled the same trick so it could give Lopez Obrador a taste of its coconut milk, she added.

However, he can also sow division.

Since running for Mexico City’s local congress for a party allied to him in 2012, Sierra and Lopez Obrador have not spoken because he was unhappy about her entering politics, she said.

That account could not be confirmed by a spokesman for the candidate, though he said it was true that they had not spoken.

“You have to be 100 percent with me, because otherwise you’re 100 percent against me,” Sierra said of Lopez Obrador.

Sierra, who recalled the split with sadness, is now part of the right-left coalition supporting his rival, Ricardo Anaya, a former head of the center-right National Action Party (PAN).

Lopez Obrador went back on the road after finishing runner-up again in 2012, and became the focal point of opposition after the PRI formed a loose legislative alliance with the PAN and his old base, the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

He formed a new party, the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) and by 2015, senior government officials were tacitly admitting AMLO was in pole position to win the next election.

And as support for the PRI imploded over corruption scandals, record levels of violence and economic growth that fell short of expectations, Lopez Obrador’s stature grew.

Sweetening his appeal has been a mellower edition of Lopez Obrador, who, in contrast to previous campaigns, has reveled in the chance to mock himself to confound his detractors.

“I can handle the dirt roads better now,” a laughing Lopez Obrador told an audience of university students in April.

Part of the transformation, said his senior campaign aide Tatiana Clouthier, has been Lopez Obrador’s wife Beatriz Gutierrez, a forthright feminist who has broadened his appeal among female voters in Mexico.

Using social media, both women have helped soften his once prickly image, tweeting light-hearted pictures of Lopez Obrador as Superman as well as a short manga-style cartoon made by a fan featuring AMLO as a corruption-busting hero.

Yet flashes of the fire that prompted Lopez Obrador to declare “to hell with your institutions” after his 2006 loss still surface. His response in the presidential debates to criticism was often just to point to his massive poll lead.

If Mexico’s problems persisted under his rule, critics worry Lopez Obrador’s opposition instincts may lead him to keep pinning the blame on others, potentially po上海419论坛larizing the country.

U.S. extradites former Panama president to home country

PANAMA CITY ( ) – The United States on Monday extradited former Pa,上海419论坛Maisey,namanian president Ricardo Martinelli to the Central American country, the U.S. State Department said, to face charges of illegal wiretapping.

Martinelli, a 66-year-old supermarket tycoon, was arrested in June 2017 in Mia,上海贵族宝贝论坛Jagger,mi after Panama requested his extradition on charges that he had used public money to spy on more than 150 political rivals during his 2009-2014 administration.

Martinelli has maintained his innocence and said he is a victim of political persecution by current president Juan Carlos Varela, who previously served as his vice president.

Panamanian authorities said Martinelli was extradited at 8:44 a.m. (1344 GMT). They did not give details of his arrival, but dozens of Martinelli’s supporters gathered at the Tocumen international airport, waving flags of the political party the former president founded, local television footage showed.

Panamanian authorities said Martinelli will be held at the Renacer prison outside Panama City.

In a hearing after arriving in Panama, a judge refused to grant Martinelli’s request to avoid prison while he awaits trial, but said he would be given a medical te,上海龙凤419Harriet,st to determine his health.

During the hearing, Martinelli said he had serious heart problems, depression and possibly pr,上海419论坛Jasmine,ostate cancer, which meant he should spend the time awaiting trial in a pri爱上海419vate hospital.

Martinelli attorney Roniel Ortiz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Deputy foreign minister Luis Hincapie said Panama had also asked the United States to extradite Martinelli’s sons, Ricardo and Luis.

Panamanian prosecutors in November accused the two of receiving $49 million from Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht while their father was president. Last year, Odebrecht agreed to pay $220 million in fines to Panama and to co-operate with probes into bribes paid to Panamanian officials.

Hincapie told Panamanian television the extradition request for Martinelli’s sons was sent “some weeks ago.”

Residents of China border city hope U.S.-North Korea summit spurs…

DANDONG, China ( ) – Residents of the Chinese city that stands to benefit the most from爱上海 a positive outcome from Tuesday’s historic U.S.-North Korea summit in Singapore said they were hopeful that it would lead to peace and bolster cross-border business.

“Whenever we go out and chat with others, basically everyone is keeping an eye on this, because it has a direct impact on our business,” said Zheng Zhefan, 44, who runs a shop selling Japanese products that were popular with North Korean traders before sanctions against the country kicked-in.

Still, there was little outward evidence that Tuesday was more than an ordinary day in Dandong, where traders have been squeezed by United Nations resolutions that had further isolated impoverished North Korea because of its nuclear and missile programs.

As the conduit for the bulk of North Korea’s i,爱上海419Elizabeth,nternational trade, Dandong’s fortunes have long been hinged to those of the neighboring country, and residents have for decades ridden waves of optimism and disappointment.

“If the meeting between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump is successful it will be extremely good for Dandong because we rely on border trade,” said Jiang Xiaohong, who was walking along the banks of the Yalu River, which separates the t,爱上海Jada,wo countries.

Jiang, 35, runs a clothing firm and her husband is an investor in a processing business in North Korea.

“My husband is quite anxious about the meeting,” she said. “I’m maintaining a calm attitude and hope they will make good out of it.”

Signs of a potential opening up of the North Korean economy following Kim’s dramatic visit to Beijing in March have fueled a frenzy of speculative property investment in Dandong.

On Tuesday morning, though, a big riverside video screen displayed advertisements,上海419论坛Mae,, not news of the summit.

State broadcaster CCTV carried live footage of the opening handshake between Trump and Kim but then switched to other coverage. Several shopkeepers in Dandong were watching Chinese soap operas, not the news, although other residents said they were paying close attention.

Across China, the Trump-Kim meeting f,上海千花网Leif, ailed to gain much early traction on domestic social media. As of midday, it was only the 32nd most-searched item on the Twitter-like Weibo, with the past weekend’s Shanghai Security Organisation summit in the city of Qingdao the most-searched.

Still, residents of Dandong following developments on their phones and news apps said they were hopeful that the summit would lead to regional stability.

“Seeing the handshake, as a Chinese citizen, it makes me feel happy,” said Wu Baoku, a 69-year-old retiree, who was also taking his morning walk.

“There’s still a long way to go on the road to peace in the peninsula, but we must go down this route because China has already stated that there cannot be war on the peninsula, that’s what the Communist party has said.”

Once-brash Rice quietly builds Obama’s bridge to Congress on Syria

WASHINGTON ( ) – Susan Rice is facing her first key test as President Barack Obama’s national security adviser as she helps lead a White House effort to convince a skeptical Congress that the United States must respond to Syria’s apparent use of chemical weapons.

Rice has made an abrupt transition from a high-profile and sometimes combative U.S. ambassador, who scolded the U.N. Security Council for failing to agree on Syria sanctions, to a behind-the-scenes power player at the White House.

Rice, who on Thursday evening moderated an unclassified phone briefing by top Obama security aides for congressional leaders, has had a patchy relationship with lawmakers.

She was pilloried by opposition Republicans for saying that a September 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Bengh上海419论坛azi, Libya, was the work of a spontaneous crowd rather than Islamist militants. Critics charged it was part of an attempt to protect Obama during his re-election campaign, which the White House vigorously disputed.

A November trip to Capitol Hill to smooth the waters did not go well, perhaps dooming her hopes to be Obama’s second-term secretary of state.

But there are some signs that Rice, 48, who took over in early July as Obama’s top security adviser, is building bridges to opponents and entertaining contrary views as the president weighs limited military strikes on Syrian military installations.

Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, who opposed any move by Obama to nominate her for the State Department job, said they had nonetheless found a willing ear in Rice.

“As far as I’m concerned, she’s at least established a line of communication between Lindsey Graham and me, and I’m sure that was not the most enjoyable chore that she had,” McCain told .

Rice, however, is not necessarily adopting the senators’ demand for aggressive U.S. military action in Syria. Obama said on Wednesday any strike would be “tailored, limited” and aimed at deterring Syria from using chemical weapons in the future.

“I think she realizes that they have to respond, but I get the impression that she is certainly not convinced of mine and Senator Graham’s views that this has to be a sustained effort in order to bring down Bashar a,上海千花网Fergie,l-Assad ultimately,” said McCain.

Representative Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Rice “was magnificent” on Thursday’s conference call.

While Rice has generally been an advocate for action in Syria, he said she did not make the case during the call. “She has generally been, but she didn’t make the case this time about it one way or another,” he said in an interview.

Representative Buck McKeon, Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Co,上海龙凤419Hannalise,mmittee, was not so complimentary.

While calling Rice and the other top officials “professional,” he said: “I would have liked to have seen the president conducting this (call). And it kind of hit me (as) kind of ironic that she was the one who was first sent out to all of the Sunday talk shows to talk about Benghazi.”

Exactly what advice Rice is providing Obama, or how large a role she is playing in internal debates, is unclear. White House officials declined to comment on those matters.

Her views on the Syrian conflict have basically mirrored the president’s cautious approach of avoiding getting the United States bogged down in another costly war.,爱上海Imara, Obama has withdrawn U.S. troops from Iraq and is winding down the combat mission in Afghanistan.

“I think the loss of human life really weighs on her, as it does on the president, and I think for all of us there is a desire to do something,” said Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, who knows Rice. “But she is pragmatic enough to know what we do has to be carefully thought out, or it could have dramatically adverse consequences.”

Rice has been active in U.S. efforts to assemble something resembling a coalition of like-minded nations to respond to what U.S. officials say is undeniable proof that the Syrian government of Assad used chemical weapons to kill hundreds in a Damascus suburb on August 21. That effort suffered a big setback on Thursday as close ally Britain said it would not participate in any military action.

Like Obama, she had long appeared reluctant for the United States to intervene militarily in Syria, fearing it was too risky. That position contrasted with her push for swift U.S. intervention in Libya in 2011, when, as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, she urged skeptics at the Pentagon that it was worth supporting British and French calls for quick U.N.-backed action to halt Muammar Gaddafi’s attacks on civilians.

Supporters of the Syrian rebels in Washington have their hopes pinned on Rice, because she sought U.N. sanctions against Assad,上海419论坛Ramona,’s government and has been known at as a voice for protecting civilians endangered by conflict. Over 100,000 people have died in Syria since the uprising began there in March 2011.

“I think Susan Rice is someone who is more of an advocate of greater (U.S.) leadership and action on Syria,” said Mouaz Moustafa, executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force, which supports humanitarian aid organizations in Syria.

Rice has kept a low public profile at the White House, perhaps to some degree an effort to adjust to her new position and put behind her the controversy surrounding her after four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed on September 11, 2012, in Benghazi.

The Obama administration’s position on what happened in Benghazi, outlined in talking points that Rice stubbornly hewed to in five TV appearances the Sunday after the attack, was that the incident was a spontaneous demonstration in response to an anti-Muslim video. Ultimately, Islamist radicals were blamed for the attack.

Rice insisted she had no role in developing the Benghazi talking points.

She has clearly moved on. Since relocating to the White House, she has been immersed in crises ranging from the Egyptian military’s ouster of elected President Mohamed Mursi and Russia’s decision to grant asylum to an American accused of U.S. espionage charges to now, Syria.

The national security adviser is responsible for coordinating U.S. foreign policy and national security agencies for the president; developing options for action and offering personal advice; and in some White Houses – although not Obama’s – acting as a public spokesperson for U.S. policies.

White House officials and friends say Rice enjoys the president’s confidence and has adopted some subtle changes from the way her predecessor, Tom Donilon, operated. She has begun tweeting U.S. policy positions, something Donilon did not do.

“Met with a group of senior Israeli officials yesterday, including NSA Amidror, to discuss a range of issues, including Iran, Egypt, and Syria,” she tweeted on Tuesday, referring to a group that included Israeli national security adviser Yaakov Amidror.

She attends a 7:45 a.m. meeting of senior White House staff each day where top aides lay out what they have on their plates. Donilon sent his deputy to that meeting.

Still, there have been no major departures from the structure established by Donilon, who was considered an inclusive, honest broker at his job and well-respected by Obama.

David Rothkopf, the chief executive and editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy magazine, who has known Rice since they worked together in former President Bill Clinton’s administration, said Rice had put a focus on continuity and maintaining the approaches that had been developed over the preceding four years.

“She hasn’t brought in a big team, she hasn’t disrupted the staff structure there in a dramatic way. That tells a lot, not only about her, but how the president viewed the process that was developed under Donilon,”‘ he said.

It’s bathing suit season andMiley Cyrus is dressed for the occasion.

As we’re in the full swing of summer, the “Party Up the Street” star has been “keeping’ it casual” in an itsy bitsy black string bikini. The songstress shared snaps and selfies of herself in the beachwear on Instagram as she lounged inside a sun-filled house.

While it’s unclear where Cyrus was posing or her personal photo shoot, she clearly had some fun with it as she sported a blazer on top. “Business as usual,” she said of one snap.

“Selfie-ish,” Cyrus captioned another photo sans blazer.

The star reportedly headed out on an “impromptu road trip” earlier this week and judging by the open suitcase next to her, she’s either still on the go or took a break from unpacking.

Late last month, the star headed across the pond to take the stage at theGlastonbury Festival in England. It’s bound to continue being a busy summer for Cyrus, who released the first of th上海419论坛ree upcoming extended plays, She Is Coming,in May.

In June, she dropped “Mother’s Daughter,” the lead single from her second extended play,She Is Here, which is expected to release this summer.

The wait is on! In the meantime, here’s how other celebs have been spending their summer:
